The lost meaning of Martial Arts: The white belt at the start of your martial arts journey represents purity, naivety and distinguishes the neophyte. It was meant to clinch the 'hanten' or hemp jacket. The 'dogi' is a 1920's judo creation. The grading system a relatively new expression of capitalism (no judgement, this is a tough lifelong gig, especially for female Sensie. I still get enquires about a 'real male teacher". Yes. Sigh.). The wear of your belt indicated to your community what 'sweat on my t-shirt' shows instagram followers - the level of your discipline and commitment to repetition, learning and the honing and consequent integration of the brain, body and spirit. You must NEVER wash your belt. It was as ridiculous a concept as washing away your muscle. As you trained harder, longer, through sickness, injury, lack of motivation and disappointment the more the your belt would transition with you. From grey, to brown (from dried blood), to black as night, and eventually to master level... back to white. This signifies the belt wearing and fraying back to its original condition. The nothingness. The snake biting its tail. The true zen notion that all is nothing. Going on the hero's journey only to return home. Understanding that all is connected, and that separation is the great forgetting. That the more you learn, the less you know. This is true evolution of the human spirit. If we are all going to die, then what was this all about? Did you devote your life to the one true cause - your evolution? Whether you believe you are eternal, or finite, this to me is the one true priority of your life. A daily ritual. As important - or - more important then food or water. Everything else is just a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal - distracting us from our true nature.

***CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of domestic violence and lethal assault*** Destroyers, Men are proven to be killing women, but they're getting off without punishment commensurate with their crimes "because the law does not classify domestic violence deaths in the worst category of murder". "Last week Supreme Court Justice David Davies said he could not give a man who killed his wife by setting their house on fire and locking her in a bedroom a life sentence because the 'murder of a partner' has not been considered the type of case which warrants that much jail time," even though the Crown prosecutor moved for a life sentence. “ 'Consistency in sentencing is an important principle,' [Davies] said." One of the [unfathomable] reasons given for not locking these murderers up for life is they’re unlikely to find another partner when they're released so probably won't reoffend. Wait – what???!!! "A Daily Telegraph investigation can reveal that out of more than 150 cases in NSW since 1991 there had never been a case where someone received a life sentence solely for killing their female partner." At least the NSW Attorney-General Mark Speakman is now calling for advice on reforms to the sentencing of DV murder cases. https://tinyurl.com/y83nevko Destroyers, what advice do you have for sentencing judges who believe a man murdering his partner isn't as bad as murdering a stranger? ------------------------------------------------------- If you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault, domestic or family violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit 1800RESPECT.org.au. Walking, Destroyers. Down a street. Across a park. Through a shopping centre. What should be simple – getting yourself to a destination on foot – isn't, when you're a woman or girl. It's fraught with possible danger. And if you happen to be black, the stakes are way, way higher. When Aminatta Forna was twenty, she was walking "along the King’s Road in Chelsea in London. It is the 1980s. Three men are coming towards me; they are clearly together, though the foot traffic on the pavement requires each to walk a half pace behind the other. They are white, dressed in tight jeans and cap-sleeve T-shirts. The first man, as he passes, looks me in the eye and says: 'You’re a pretty girl.' The second one smirks, but says nothing. The third one leans into my face and breathes: 'Nigger!' " "As a child I was taught to ignore aggressive dogs, to keep walking. Once you’re out of its territory, the dog will leave you alone, so goes the conventional wisdom, and mostly it works. The same is supposed to be true of men, except it isn’t. They walk alongside you, they kerb-crawl you. If you tell them to leave you alone they will call you a bitch and ask you who the fuck you think you are. Every encounter, however seemingly benign, contains the possibility of violence." Just... walking. "I want to dress for my destination, the person or people I am going to meet or the event I am headed for, but I must also dress for the men I do not know who I will encounter along the way. Anonymity is something I can only imagine, to walk unguarded an impossibility." Yet so many plaintive cries of "NotAllMen" mean that "Somehow something enacted in broad daylight thousands of times in the lifetime of virtually every woman has gone entirely unnoticed by most straight men. At some point you have to ask: How can it be so?" Read Forna's beautifully written piece, "Power Walking" – it's long, but it's worth it: https://lithub.com/power-walking/?single=true Destroyers, what's your walking / sitting / queuing / just-standing-still-minding-your-own-business harassment story?
